ELIZABETH OLIVER SAMPLER

ELIZABETH OLIVER SAMPLER

The Hour of Prayer

Hail, peaceful hour supremely blest
Amid the hours of earthly care,The hour that yields the spirit rest That sacred hour, the hour of prayer. And when my hours of prayer are past, Oh, may I leave these Sabbeth days To find eternity at last A never ending hour of praise

The original sampler was worked on 42 count linen and is in the archives of York City Museum. The building is most likely to be a Quaker Orphanage.

‘Did it annoy her to have to complete the apple using blue thread?’
